KNIT MAGAZINE
Hi, everyone! This time, we are pleased to reintroduce one of our popular material: SPUGNA.
Since its original debut, the lineup has expanded with new variations.
We hope this article will serve as a helpful reference for your future planning.
Table of Contents
First, let us revisit the basics.
SPUGNA is made from French Merino wool (hereafter referred to as French wool).
Traditionally, French wool has mainly been used for interior items such as rugs and curtains. The reason lies in its raw fiber characteristics:
Because of the extra effort required to remove impurities and the fiber thickness, French wool was long considered unsuitable for fashion apparel.
However, its unique bulky texture and airy touch stood out to us. By carefully hand-removing impurities, spinning the yarn, and applying our own colors and finishing processes, we created SPUGNA as part of the MONTELUCE lineup.
The name SPUGNA reflects this texture. In French, spugna means “sponge,” which perfectly describes its soft, voluminous hand feel.
In 2024, SPUGNA obtained certification from SEGARD MASUREL in France.
This certification guarantees that SPUGNA is truly made from French wool.
We also provide certified hangtags.
All three counts are featured in one book.
Based on the original single yarn:
These three types allow you to fully enjoy SPUGNA’s bulky character. They are especially popular for cable patterns, where the stitch definition really shines.
Starting in 2024, we began offering SPUGNA as a single yarn.
SPUGNA 1/16
As a single, it may twist, so we recommend designing balanced structures to counteract skewing.
This yarn allows for delicate yet bulky fabric expressions.

SPUGNA TAM 1/7
Compared to the standard SPUGNA, it has a slightly hairier and softer texture.
As it is untreated (non-superwash), it can also be used for treatment processes.
The finer version of SPUGNA TAM, introduced in 2024.
Note: We do not stock dyed yarns. Limited black sample yarn is available.

SPUGNA MOLE 1/1.9
Compared to regular SPUGNA, it has an airy, cushioned hand feel, and is remarkably lightweight
A finer version of SPUGNA MOLE, launched in 2024.
Previously, gauge restrictions limited its usage. With this finer count, the range of applications has greatly expanded.
Note: Sample yarn stock is limited. Please contact our sales team if you would like to consider using it.
As the latest series using SPUGNA, we launched a cotton–wool twisted yarn in 2025.
SPUGNA FLOW 2/16
The cotton features a uniquely textured surface, created by twisting it with a cotton slub yarn of special pitch.
That wraps up our reintroduction of SPUGNA.
With its distinct texture and ever-evolving lineup, we hope SPUGNA continues to be a source of inspiration in your creations!
