Project Overview

When was the last time you looked up at the sky and simply observed the shapes of the clouds or the colors above you?

Just before creating this piece, I spent time in rural Hokkaido experiencing dairy farming. The people I met there lived in a way where changes in weather and seasons were sensed not through information, but through the sky and the surrounding scents. When I tried to be conscious in the same way, I was amazed by how richly nature reveals itself when you perceive it with all five senses.

It made me realize how many things are “right in front of us yet go unnoticed because we never try to see them.”

This work, “Clouds and Waves”, captures the sky I saw in Hokkaido using alcohol ink, and the waves of the Shonan sea expressed through knitted yarn.

The canvas depicts clouds illuminated by light, while delicate waves–knitted with Maruyasu Corporation translucent yarn MIERU–rise in front of an acrylic plate.

If you have the chance to see the piece in person, I hope you enjoy the fine expressions of the knitted yarn and the depth of the sky visible from a distance. And above all, I hope it inspires you to notice or feel something you might usually overlook.

Encounter with the Translucent Yarn “MIERU”

I had long wanted to express waves through knitting, but strong yarn colors tended to overpower the artwork, concealing the painted elements behind them. Even sewing thread felt too thick; I kept searching for a yarn that was “as thin as possible while still allowing knitting, and translucent enough not to obscure the art.”

That was when I discovered MIERU by Maruyasu Corporation. It was exactly the yarn I had envisioned, allowing me to express the delicacy of waves just as I imagined.
I am truly grateful for this encounter, and using MIERU has sparked many new ideas I hope to explore in future works.

Our Comments

By using MIERU for this piece, the artist has beautifully captured the Shonan sea.

MIERU is an ultra-fine, transparent yarn that is most commonly used for machine knitting. In this work, it was hand-knitted to create a delicate expression of waves, opening up a new and original way of showcasing MIERU’s potential.
All of us at MONTELUCE are truly delighted by this new form of expression.
